The Milan born graphic artist was one of the first Italians to follow the example of the legendary German art school Bauhaus. From the 1930s he devoted himself to abstraction and processes such as solarisation and photograms, also worked for the theatre and created experimental films. With his surrealist photographs he does not seek to merely reproduce the appearance of objects, but creates enigmatic signs by means of reflections, light and shadow.
