Magnum's exhibition blindstamp in the margin lower right, signed on the reverse. LITERATURE William Manchester (ed.), In our Time. The world as seen by Magnum photographers, London 1989, p. 45; Ian Berry, Living Apart. South Africa under Apartheid, London 1996, p. 159. Berry was intensely engaged with the effects of the apartheid system on South African society. This wide-angle shot was taken during a funeral oration for a 14-year-old girl shot by the police. Such occasions regularly led to confrontation between police and outraged mourners, and Tutu often tried to mediate between the hardened fronts in his riveting speeches.
