The French painter Henri Matisse is forever branded on our memories by Cartier-Bresson, as he photographed the painter at home, in his "Villa Le Rêve", surrounded by birds and his head covered with a turban. Although it was taken ten years before the master's death, Matisse was already a broken man. He and his wife had separated in 1939 after 41 years of marriage. In 1941, he underwent a colostomy, which left him confined to a wheelchair. Cartier-Bresson deeply admired Matisse, who designed the dust jacket for his famous book "Images à la Sauvette" (1952).
