Greene first met Monroe after shooting her for "Look magazine" in 1953. The two struck up a friendship and formed a production company to gain control of her career. Besides producing two of her films, Greene did more than 50 photo sessions with Marilyn, including remarkably intimate and seductive images, before their friend- and partnership ended in 1957. The "Black Sitting" took place in Milton Greene's studio in June 1956, shortly before Marilyn set up for the shooting of "The Bus Stop," produced by Greene for 20th Century Fox in Hollywood. The outfit she wore at the photo shoot–a black derby, bustier and fishnet stockings–also inspired her costume in the role of "Cherie" in the movie.
