We are proud and honoured to offer the Leica M3 No. 700008, produced in 1953, in 100% original and near-mint, fully working condition! This is the 8th M3 camera ever produced. The chassis number (Guss Nummer) is '182', as expected, and the serial number '700008' is also hand-engraved on the shutter crate, as was done with all of the earliest M3 cameras up to serial number 700025. The camera remains untouched and fully original, featuring all the early characteristics, including the top plate with light corner—it was never offered at auction before. The Leica M3 was the first model in the iconic Leica M-series. 'M3' stands for 'Rangefinder camera with brilliant-finder framelines for three focal lengths' in German. Compared to earlier models, the M3 introduced several technical innovations, such as the bayonet (M) mount, first unveiled at the Photokina fair in 1954. Key design elements of the M3 have been carried forward into later Leica M models, continuing even today. The Leica M3 was in production for more than 13 years, with nearly a quarter of a million units built by the time production ended in 1967. This camera, with its 'Guss' (casting) number 182, is one of the earliest Leica M3 cameras known to exist. For context, the very first Leica M3, numbered 700001, carries casting number 178.
