This camera was used by Willi Stein as a test camera, it features a lever from a 0-Series M3 and comes with a very early (1953) Summicron 2/5cm no.920741, cap. The shutter create engraved 'Stein P-1*. ' Wilhelm 'Willi' Stein (1906-1976) was the principal designer and 'father' of the M-series cameras. He began his career in engineering as an apprentice with the Iron & Steel Works of Buderus in his home town of Wetzlar. In 1936, he moved to Ernst Leitz GmbH. Barnack, who initiated and supervised the development of the original Leica, died in January of that year. This left a gap among the remaining engineers. Ludwig Leitz recognized Stein's talents and gave him an opportunity to make contributions with the company's design group. After the second World War, Stein was made the head of Leica's design department. A quite similar 'Betriebsk Stein' no.'P-0003*' in black paint is illustrated in James Lager Vol.1 Cameras, page 139. There is no other information about the offered camera.
