Sam Haskins, who worked in London since 1968, is a pioneer of nude photography in the sixties. He favoured photographing girls who did not come from professional modelling circles and who confidently faced his camera in natural, even moving poses. His visual aesthetic, in which he deliberately used blurring and coarse grain, was ground-breaking, for example for Jeanloup Sieff or David Bailey. His photo books had a lasting influence, as "Cowboy Kate" (1964), which sold over a million copies. Its venturous montages of various motifs, such as nudes and images of isolated emblems of Wild West romanticism, creating a visual language that corresponded to the new permissiveness of the Sixties. The present print comes from the Pentax Gallery in Tokyo. Haskins had a long relationship with the Pentax camera company, their gallery in Tokyo organized several of his exhibitions.
