The dancer Freda Josephine McDonald (1906–1975) from Missouri became world-famous under the name Josephine Baker. From 1925, she performed mainly in Europe. The glamour portrait with headdress was created in the studio of the famous society photographer Dora Kallmus, who became known as "Madame D'Ora". After starting out in Vienna, she opened a studio in Paris in 1925.
